Slipped Disc Treatment in London
Mr Jeremy Hucker is a London based orthopaedic consultant specialising in treating patients with spinal disorers including slipped discs.
What is a Slipped Disc?
The shock-absorbing discs in the spine have an external fibrous coat and a soft gel-like interior. A prolapsed disc occurs when the fibrous coat ruptures and some of the gel protrudes out between the vertebrae.
This can cause severe pain due to inflammation of the adjacent structures including the spinal nerves. This commonly occurs in the lower back, but can also occur in the neck and upper back.
Symptoms of a Slipped Disc
If the inflammation from the disc affects a spinal nerve, weakness, pain, numbness and tingling may occur in the leg (sciatica) or arm depending on which nerve is involved.
Causes of Slipped Disc
Incorrect lifting of objects and being overweight are risk factors, while exercising the spinal muscles is a protective factor.
Treatment and Recovery
Often the initial symtoms ease off during the first six to twelve weeks and treatment during this stage is focussed on reducing the pain with anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle balance physiotherapy. Repeated attacks or continuing symptoms may require treatment in the form of spinal injections, which in my experience have at least as good an outcome as spinal sugery and significantly lower complications.
Mr Jeremy Hucker is an orthopaedic consultant offering treatment for slipped discs in London and has extensive experience of managing low back pain and sciatica using minimally invasive techniques and low impact exercises.
